Human Rights in China (HRIC) issued a formal statement in June 2026 calling on the Chinese government to disclose his status.

The HRIC statement notes that Wang disappeared in July 2024 but the formal human-rights organization response did not come until June 2026—a gap of approximately 23 months. This lag illustrates that the international academic and human-rights community lacks rapid-response mechanisms for detecting and publicizing detentions of circumvention researchers.

Wang had been developing censorship circumvention technologies since 2017 and contributed to open-source projects targeting the Great Firewall. His personal website prominently displayed the phrase 'Across the Great Wall we can reach every corner in the world,' and a commenter on the HRIC post noted that his GitHub projects displayed 'be water' as a slogan—a phrase associated with the Hong Kong protest movement—which may have been used by authorities to establish a political attribution.
